You have decided to sell your special car. Maybe it is a Porsche 911 you have cherished for years, or a BMW M3 that has served you faithfully on the Nürburgring. The first thought for many sellers: "I will put it on a classifieds site." Understandable: classifieds are the best-known option and nearly everyone has used one. But are classifieds the right place for an enthusiast car? That depends on your car and your expectations. Classifieds are generalist platforms built for volume: from furniture to used cars. That means enormous reach, but also an audience that mainly looks at price. For a Volkswagen Golf that is fine. For a car with a special story, rare specifications or a devoted service history it can be a very different matter. In this comparison we put both options side by side: a listing on a general classifieds platform versus an auction through a specialised platform. We look at reach, audience, time investment, costs and final proceeds.
| Aspect | Auction via Octane | Classifieds |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Enthusiasts and collectors actively looking for special cars(advantage) | Broad audience, many price shoppers |
| Presentation | Editorial text and structured specifications by Octane; photos per our photo guide(advantage) | Your own photos and text, no editing |
| Pricing | Buyers bid against each other for seven days(advantage) | Asking price and negotiation, usually downwards |
| Time investment | Supply photos and answer questions; we do the rest(advantage) | Answer messages, no-shows, relisting |
| Reach | Buyers in 12 Western European countries, targeted campaign per auction | Very large national platforms, unfiltered audience |
| Cost to you | No seller commission; only your own photos, or a photographer from our network | No commission; possible listing fees and paid options to stand out |
| Safety | Bidders verified via card reservation or identity check(advantage) | Unknown buyers, risk of scams and fake offers |
| Moment of sale | Fixed end date, bids until the last minute(advantage) | A listing can run for weeks to months |
| Price protection | Confidential reserve, agreed together beforehand | You set the asking price and decide whether to accept |
| After the sale | Private chat with a verified buyer; we guide the handover(advantage) | Settle everything with the buyer yourself |

The dot marks the side with the advantage on that aspect.
Note: while an Octane auction is live, the car may not be offered for sale elsewhere at the same time.
Classifieds are a fine option for common used cars where price is the main selling point. Think of a five-year-old Volkswagen Polo, a base-spec Ford Focus or a Toyota Yaris. This type of car attracts buyers who choose mainly on price and mileage, and there is nothing wrong with that.
A specialised auction is the better choice as soon as your car has something special. That could be a rare colour combination, a full service book from a marque specialist, low mileage for its age, or simply a brand with a loyal following of enthusiasts. Think of an Alfa Romeo GTV with full history, a Mercedes-Benz SL with hardtop or a Mazda MX-5 NA in original condition.
The difference lies in the buyer: on classifieds you compete with hundreds of similar listings. On a specialised auction platform you present your car to an audience actively looking for exactly this type of car and willing to pay its true value. If you would rather sell entirely on your own, without any platform, read auction vs. private sale.
Octane is built for one purpose: connecting special cars with the right buyers. Classifieds are generalist platforms with enormous reach; Octane is small and focused: every visitor comes for cars like yours.
In practice that means: we write the listing text and structure the specifications, you supply the photos per the photo guide or via a photographer from our network. Around the auction we run a targeted campaign in the Netherlands and the rest of Western Europe, and for seven days verified buyers bid against each other instead of negotiating against you. As the seller you pay no commission.
Would you rather compare Octane with other auction platforms, such as Collecting Cars or Catawiki? You will find those comparisons on the overview page.
In an Octane auction you can set a reserve: a minimum price below which your car will not be sold. Three things to know:
Bidders can see that there is a reserve, but not how high. They bid on what the car is worth to them, not on your floor.
You set the reserve with our team before the auction, based on comparable auction results. A dealer’s offer or a trade-in value can be a good starting point.
If the highest bid stays below the reserve, the car is not sold and you are not bound to anything. We then look with you and the highest bidder at whether a deal is still possible.
Prefer to auction without a reserve? That is possible too; discuss it with our team.
Submit your car and our team will review it within 48 hours
