Selling your car yourself to a private buyer. It sounds like the most logical route: no middleman, direct contact with the buyer. You place a listing, someone responds, you work it out together. Simple in theory. In practice it turns out to be a good deal more complicated, especially when you are selling a special car. A private sale runs on negotiation: you set an asking price, the buyer tries to bring it down. That is fine for a standard used car, but with an enthusiast car it can be frustrating. Buyers who do not see the value of your car consistently offer too little, and you have to explain again and again why your car is worth more than that other random listing. An auction turns this around. Instead of defending your price, you let buyers bid against each other. The market sets the value. That sounds exciting, and it is, but in practice it often delivers a fairer price than months of negotiation. And contrary to what many people think, it costs you as the seller no commission.

The dot marks the side with the advantage on that aspect.
As the seller you pay no commission at an Octane auction.
A private sale can work well in a few specific situations. If you already have a buyer in your network, for example someone from a car club who has had their eye on your car for years, a direct sale makes sense. And if your car is fairly common and you do not need the maximum price, selling it yourself can work just fine.
An auction is the better choice as soon as your car is special enough to attract several interested buyers. Think of a Porsche Boxster with rare options, a Golf GTI with low mileage or a classic Saab 900 Turbo in good condition. For cars like these, the more buyers bidding, the fairer the final price.
The difference is practical too. With a private sale you spend weeks responding, hosting viewings and negotiating. With an auction you supply photos per our photo guide, or hire a photographer from our network, and we take over the rest. If you would rather hand over the photos and the communication as well, look at managed selling.
Octane takes the heavy lifting of a private sale off your hands without you losing control. You decide with our team whether and at what level to set a reserve, you remain the owner until the deal is done, and as the seller you pay no commission.
We write the listing text and structure the specifications; you supply the photos per the photo guide or via a photographer from our network. Around every auction we run a targeted campaign: our own channels, e-mail alerts to relevant users and advertising in the Netherlands and the rest of Western Europe. Buyers in twelve countries see your car, and for seven days they bid against each other instead of negotiating against you.
Afterwards you and the buyer get a private chat with each other’s details and settle payment and handover directly; on request we put you in touch with specialists for inspection or transport. No strangers on your driveway: the buyer is verified before they can bid and has paid their buyer fee before you are in contact.
In an Octane auction you can set a reserve: a minimum price below which your car will not be sold. Three things to know:
Bidders can see that there is a reserve, but not how high. They bid on what the car is worth to them, not on your floor.
You set the reserve with our team before the auction, based on comparable auction results. A dealer’s offer or a trade-in value can be a good starting point.
If the highest bid stays below the reserve, the car is not sold and you are not bound to anything. We then look with you and the highest bidder at whether a deal is still possible.
Prefer to auction without a reserve? That is possible too; discuss it with our team.
Submit your car and our team will review it within 48 hours
