A dealer or trader calls: they want to buy your car. Quick money, no hassle with listings or viewings, and the car is gone straight away. Sounds attractive, especially if you want to sell fast. But are you getting a fair price? The reality is that a dealer or trader buys professionally. They work back from what they think they can resell the car for, minus reconditioning, margin and risk. That is not bad faith, it is their business model: to them your car is trade, not passion. And the details that make the difference to an enthusiast barely count in that calculation. An auction offers a fundamentally different model. Instead of one-on-one negotiation with a professional who buys cars every day, you let several buyers, enthusiasts who really want your car, bid against each other. That shifts the balance of power in your favour.

The dot marks the side with the advantage on that aspect.
Already have a dealer offer? Use it as the reference for your reserve: then you never sell for less at auction.
Selling to a dealer suits a limited number of situations: when speed is your absolute priority and the financial difference does not matter to you, or when your car is a common model without special features. A three-year-old Skoda Octavia sells fine through a dealer, and the price difference is then limited.
As soon as your car is special, the situation changes completely. A dealer looks at your classic Alfa Romeo, your low-mileage BMW M car or your well-documented Porsche and mainly sees the risk and effort of reselling it through their own channels. Their offer reflects that, not the actual value to an enthusiast.
On an auction platform you reach buyers who are specifically looking for your type of car. They judge your car on its own merits: the condition, the history, the specification, the story. And because several buyers bid at the same time, the market sets a fair price instead of a dealer. If you are buying another car at the same time, also read auction vs. trade-in. And if you do want to sell directly to a dealer, you can through selling directly: a non-binding offer from a dealer in our network, free for you.
Octane skips the middleman. Your car goes straight to the enthusiast who wants to pay what it is worth to them, not what a trader thinks they can resell it for. That difference is greatest for cars a dealer can do little with: niche models, classics and cars with special specifications that are hard to place through regular trade channels.
Around every auction we run a targeted campaign (our own channels, e-mail alerts, advertising in the Netherlands and the rest of Western Europe) and verified buyers bid against each other for seven days. A dealer offers a fixed amount, once, on their terms. As the seller you pay Octane no commission.
If your car does not fit the platform, for example because it is a tidy daily driver or a young used car, we say so honestly. With your consent we can then bring it to the attention of dealers who are looking for exactly such cars, for a direct purchase from you as the owner.
In an Octane auction you can set a reserve: a minimum price below which your car will not be sold. Three things to know:
Bidders can see that there is a reserve, but not how high. They bid on what the car is worth to them, not on your floor.
You set the reserve with our team before the auction, based on comparable auction results. A dealer’s offer or a trade-in value can be a good starting point.
If the highest bid stays below the reserve, the car is not sold and you are not bound to anything. We then look with you and the highest bidder at whether a deal is still possible.
Prefer to auction without a reserve? That is possible too; discuss it with our team.
Submit your car and our team will review it within 48 hours
